There’s absolutely nothing people like any more than a little plant genocide, particularly in their backyard pond, or even their fishpond wherein it would cause major issues for the fish as well as you. Fish do not enjoy moving through a huge underwater forest any more than the rest of us, so it is best to control the plants on the bottom of your pond, before some of them develops into the carnivorous plant from Jumanji.

An excess of aquatic plants may create issues all the way from watercraft motors being clogged, to poor results while fishing, to children having a terrible time attempting to swim through your pond. None of those are anything that you desire, so it is better to eradicate the source of the problem before it starts.

You’ve a couple choices at your disposal, choices which range from biological control, meaning the introduction of Grass Carp which naturally control the aquatic life populous, to lining your whole pond with plastic…which would be a rather dramatic measure, but you know, whatever floats your boat.

So let’s go over a couple of your choices, and then you may decide which one is best for you, but keep in mind that these are just a very small selection of choices, and you must speak with different pond owners, or experts to learn about every single option at your disposal.

Aquamog – Is a versitile aquatic vessel designed to perform multiple different aquatic maintenance tasks.

Aquatic Harvester – Ridding yourself of the plants through manual labor, is of course a great option. Of course, if the plant life isn’t on the shore, or isn’t|is not sitting on the top of the pond, you may discover yourself buying some diving equipment to swim down there without suffocating. If you don’t have knowledge of the ins and outs of scuba diving, or cannot stop breathing for a long time, it is encouraged for you to get a hold of the experts. Believe it or not, there are businesses who work to clean the bottom of ponds and lakes, so you’ll be pretty well off.

Chemicals – There are chemicals at your disposal to get rid of the pesky plant life. A few of these chemicals are Fluridone,2,4-D, Glyphosate, Diquat, Endothall. Naturally though, it is not encouraged that you use any sort of herbicide or chemical to kill off your plant life, which isn’t unlike the reason it is not recommended for you to throw a live wire into the pond to catch your prize fish. Utilizing herbicides may be deadly to fish, as well as any other life which you may have residing in your pond. Use these with care, or even better, do not use them period unless you have no other choice.

Dye – You can purchase a huge selection of chemicals which would tint the color of your water, and thereby reduce the volume of sunlight for any aquatic plants. It’s better to do such in the early spring for best results.

Lining – Lining the bottom of your pond with a type of plastic is additionally a viable option, as that would stunt the development of any aquatic plant life. Keep in mind that it may get costly, so consider the size of your pond, as well as the amount of plastic you will need. Naturally that is a good option for compact fish ponds, but maybe not quite so much for an entire lake in your backyard.

Keep in mind that there are plenty of methods to stop plant life from infiltrating your pond, and to discover the method which is good for you, consult an expert or talk to other pond keepers.
