You may have chosen the perfect compound or recurve bow most suitable for your needs but have you thought about which type of arrows you will use with it? Selecting the right type of arrow is crucial to your success and needs to be a good match for your bow and be fitting for how you will be using it. Will you be using the bow principally for hunting, competitions or target practise? What options in arrow construction are there and which ones are best for you?

Wood Arrows

In the past all arrows were made from wood but currently wooden arrows are used only in longbow competitions and by novices. They are not popular for other uses because they don’t give consistent results due to variation between arrows. Wood arrows are easily broken and can warp but they are cheap and are good for beginners to practise with.

Fiberglass Arrows

Fiberglass arrows are more consistent than wooden arrows as they are uniformly made but they are brittle and can also break easily. They are suitable for hunting and are easily fitted to different draw lengths.

Aluminium Arrows

Aluminium arrows are a great deal more durable than either fiberglass or wooden arrows. They are uniformly manufactured so are consistent and reliable. They are available in a extensive variety of types and sizes so you will be able to find one suitable for you and your bow. Their consistency and reliability make them perfect for hunting and competition use and they are also made with arrowheads that are interchangeable. They are more expensive than fiberglass arrows so may not be a good idea of you are still losing a lot of arrows. Cheaper arrows would be a better choice until your skills improve!

Carbon Composite Arrows

These types of arrows are used by more serious archers as they are consistent, durable and high speed. They are made with a carbon composite shell surrounding a core made from aluminium and are extremely strong so will not easily break as fiberglass arrows can do. They are certainly the finest arrows that are available but they are expensive so are usually used by more serious archers.

Other Considerations

Fletches today are generally manufactured from synthetic materials although you may find handmade feather fletches. Fletches are important to impart stability to the arrow during flight and helps to increase velocity. Have a go with different types to establish how the different types feel in use. The point is also important. The point used on a hunting arrow, for instance, needs to be specially designed. Don’t forget to buy a suitable quiver to protect your arrows and pack some spare drawstrings.
